Stronger filtration and more frequent maintenance.
Today, many facilities are using MERV rated filters. MERV ratings measure how effectively a filter stops dust, contaminants, and even viruses. MERV 13 to 16 is the range of filters used to achieve hospital level air quality, and most commercial HVAC systems will accept MERV-13. Increasing the pace of maintenance to replace filters every month is considered good practice during the pandemic.
Increased ventilation and mixing of outside air.
Stagnant air and recirculated indoor air have been seen as problems during the pandemic, as poor ventilation can result in heavy viral concentrations in some areas. Putting more outside air into circulation helps reduce the concentration and lower the chance of disease. Good airflow was always necessary to combat build ups of volatile compounds, mold, and allergens. The necessity of combating COVID-19 has served to emphasize the point.
UVC Lighting and Bipolar Ionization.
In the past, HVAC systems have rarely been counted on to take an active role in killing airborne microbes, including bacteria and viruses. Today, new technologies in UVC (ultraviolet) lighting and air ionization are becoming an integral part of commercial HVAC applications.
UVC emits short wavelength ultraviolet light which can kill microorganisms by disrupting their DNA. UVC emitters can e used to disinfect ductwork and sterilize surfaces.
Bipolar ionizers have been around for a while and were found to be effective against the SARS virus in the early 2000s. This technology releases charged atoms that float in the air and attach themselves to particles like bacteria, viruses, and mold spores. This has two beneficial effects. One is that the charged ion can disrupt or kill the pathogen directly. The other is that a buildup of ions on the virus or microbe can help make a larger particle which is easier for the MERV filter system to clean out of the air.
