2020 HVAC Trends

Industry Growth Tops the List

Even in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the HVAC industry continues to improve. In fact, the biggest trend for the industry is growth.

While all businesses have taken a hit during the epidemic lockdown, HVAC is better positioned to rebound than most. This follows the recovery in construction, nationwide.

Associated General Contractors’ chief economist Ken Simonson said that construction employment expanded in most parts of the country between April and May, 2020, as coronavirus lockdowns began to ease.

More Jobs in HVAC

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that HVACR jobs will be added at a rate of 15 percent through 2026; more than twice the average for all occupations.

In the 21st Century, the workforce in the HVAC field is aging, often retiring at a time when job growth for HVAC technicians continue to outpace the rest of the US workforce. The average age of today’s technicians is about 55 years old.

To combat the shortfall in skilled workers, the industry needs ways to attract the next generation of HVAC techs, engineers, project managers, designers, fabricators, and installers.

Some companies are following in the lead of on-the-job trainers like Rheem, which places a high priority on in-house workforce training, including dedicated regional training centers.

You can read more about industry leaders recommendations in the article Solutions for the HVAC Workforce Problem at ACHRnews.com.

The Internet of Things

IoT has been a buzz word for a while now, but far from going away, the use of smart devices in homes and commercial operations continues to grow.

While the buzz word may fade, the facts on the ground continue to advance with the  integration of technologies like smart thermostats, environmental sensors, zone controls, and products capable of reading data and adjusting systems on their own, without human input.

One example is an air purifier fitted with sensors able to detect the level of air pollution, responding by cleaning the air in the most efficient mode for which the purifier is designed. This eliminates the energy waste of devices put into continual use at settings unrelated to current environmental conditions.

Data at Your Fingertips

While the HVAC workforce may be aging, customers and clients often belong to a younger generation. This division can cause cultural conflicts. From centennial homeowners to millennial architects and project managers, younger consumers and professionals expect conveniences like communication by text and for customer service to know everything about their account at the touch of a button.

We all want a personal touch, but that means different things to different ages. Today, providing the most convenient experience possible can mean having access to an advanced CRM (customer relationship management tool), online portals, and smartphone text services, etc.

Using technologies that are slow or clumsy in retrieving information, including previous orders, order status, and service schedules can be a danger signal for younger generations.

Energy Savings

HVAC technology continues to evolve toward hyper-efficiency and green technologies. While some changes are driven by government regulations, others are simply the result of new technical developments encouraged by the money savings and return on investment possible with cutting edge solutions.

Just a few of the new energy savings technologies available include:

  • Zoning and variable refrigerant flow.
  • New refrigerant technologies.
  • Demand controlled ventilation
  • Energy recovery ventilation
