2019 is shaping up to be another year of growth in the HVAC industry.
It’s a trend that has been ongoing since at least 2011, but which may get an additional boost this year as commercial and residential installations from the 1990’s age into a period of necessary repairs and replacements.
There appear to be three main forces, or trends, shaping the future of HVAC.
Contractors, installers, duct fabricators, and career-minded trade school students all have an opportunity to take advantage of HVAC trends in 2019.
According to a recent article on the ACHR News website, interviewing a handful of the country’s top HVAC executives, a strong economy and continued growth are the order of the day. According to Kevin McNamara, senior vice president and general manager at LG Air Conditioning Technologies:
“There has been plenty of business to go around. As new facilities are being built and older ones are being renovated or repurposed, the story of comfort, technology, and efficiency going hand in hand does not change.”
While the fabrication and installation of ductwork has changed little over the years, the technology surrounding HVAC is undergoing a sea change. Efficiency standards, smart homes and smart buildings, the Internet of Things, and the technology surrounding duct estimating, manufacturing, and building information modeling offer advancements in comfort and cost savings never before available.
Baby Boomers have started to retire, and they are taking their skills with them. Too few students have been encouraged to enter the trades, and many young people have difficulty passing required drug screenings. The shortage of skilled labor is forcing contractors and installers to adopt process efficiencies that reduce onsite labor needs, including elimination of field measuring and sketching as well as developing installation practices that can be handled by less skilled labor.
At the same time, the HVAC industry represents wide open opportunity for career-mind trade school students, where better than average pay and career stability can be expected.
