5 Ways Contractors Save on Commercial HVAC Installation

  • 5 Ways Contractors Save on Commercial HVAC Installation

Saving # 5 – Proactive Delivery

At The Cincinnatus Group, delivery itself is a science.

If you’re a contractor working on a commercial HVAC job, you know truckloads of unorganized duct wastes your time.

When you have to search for the right piece or cut to fit on-site, it takes extra time, uses up more fittings, and costs you money.

With TCG’s premium, proactive delivery:

  • Our shrink-wrapped and labeled pallets of duct and fittings means you have exactly what you need at your fingertips. No more guessing and messing.
  • We work with you to create a proactive delivery schedule, with full truck loads assigned to pre-planned project zones. You get what you need where you need it to keep your crews “hanging and banging.”
  • All the fittings, elbows, angles, cleats, curbs, hangers, and accessories you need, guaranteed.

TCG’s premium delivery of organized, labeled, and fitted materials is so value added, we have seen contractors save up to $10/hour on labor for installation.

Saving # 4 – Exceptional Estimating

Every day, HVAC contractors lose $thousands on installation projects due to imprecise or unreliable estimating.

Which of the three commonly used purchasing units do you use: theoretical nominal, theoretical minimum, or actual weight?

Each method has its advantages in specific situations. The only real answer is a deep understanding of buying situations, and the experience to know what to ask for when purchasing sheet metal.

At The Cincinnatus Group, our estimating teams use best-in-class software, combined with their decades of field experience to deliver precise HVAC estimates. Estimates that give our contracting partners the advantage in winning more work and maintaining profitability.

With us, estimating is more than a side business. We’ve devoted an entire division to providing industry-leading estimates, shop drawings, coordination drawings, building information modeling and more.

Saving # 3 – Building Information Modeling

BIM, or Building Information Modeling, goes beyond traditional shop drawings to deliver the “virtual assembly” of a structure, pieced together on a computer, before field construction begins.

Using BIM, when our clients receive the final coordination drawings for fabrication, they are detailed to eliminate as many short pieces and joints as possible, saving a great deal of time during duct installation.

This approach directly reduces the cost of ductwork, eliminating the need to do a “manual takeoff” of the drawings, increasing both accuracy and time savings.

BIM also contributes to coordination between the trades, helping to eliminate conflicts between mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors as field work gets under way.  This eliminates many costly changes in the field which otherwise result in overruns and delays.

Saving # 2 – Efficient Fabrication

You might have expected us to start here or claim it was our #1 method of saving TCG’s contracting partners money.

At The Cincinnatus Group, giving you the best price on ductwork is only part of the package.

Even so, when it comes to spiral and rectangular duct and fittings, we often provide Up to 15% lower fabrication costs over the initial bid price.

This is made possible by our coordination and building information models, which are so precise we can optimize the number of standard lengths of duct and minimize the number of joints and fittings.

Of course, neither TCG’s capabilities or savings are limited to traditional duct. We provide a wide range of HVAC ductwork, including Low Pressure, Medium Pressure, and High Pressure Galvanized Spiral. Learn more by visiting our HVAC Ductwork, Specialty Ductwork (heavy gauge and welded duct), and PCD Ductwork pages.

Saving # 1 – Eliminating FMSL Labor

Field Measuring and Sketching Labor, or FMSL for short, is the costly process that starts with putting your best man in the field to perform all the necessary measurements and calculations for an order of HVAC duct.

This involves evaluating complete duct runs, measuring areas and obstructions, sketching runs and fittings, figuring lengths and elevations, etc.

It’s expensive, averaging $40 to $60 per hour across the industry. On a large project, say one with over 3,500 pieces of duct and fittings, FMSL costs can range between $20,000 and $30,000.

Today, measuring HVAC duct runs and fittings in software is  faster and more accurate, results in less errors, optimizes materials purchases, and offers significant cost savings to our contracting partners.

Even in cases where the initial drafting was not performed by TCG, we often make use of Building Information Models (BIM) from the original architects, delivering Coordination/FAB Duct drawings with the following benefits:

  • No Field Measuring or Field Layout.
  • Optimized Field Labor (your least experienced crew can handle the job).
  • Your PM, Superintendent, or Foreman can spend more time managing additional projects.
